A Glance at the Petroleum and Energy Resources Division of SLA
The Petroleum and Energy Resources (PER) Division of the Special Libraries Association (SLA) focuses on all energy resources and industries, including petroleum, natural gas, electric, coal and other forms of depletable and renewable energy. The Division is concerned with all aspects of the utilization and conservation of these energy resources including exploration, production, generation, transportation, distribution, refining, products, marketing, economics, environmental effects, regulation, and research and technology.
Make Professional Contacts
1. The best reason for joining SLA DPER is to get access to a unique and unrivalled network of more than 200 peers working in the petroleum and energy industry.
2. SLA in total has 12,000 information professionals located throughout the world, representing more than 25 different disciplines and 83 countries.
3. You can reach information professionals from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo, working in industries as diversified as biotechnology, art museums, financial services, not-for-profits, advertising agencies, governments, and many more.
4. Accessing the members’ network is easy. The members’ database is available anytime by logging in to the SLA web site. You can search members by location, employer, industry or regional chapter.
Build Your Knowledge & Stay Ahead Of the Information Curve
5. You automatically receive the monthly publication DPER bulletin which features comprehensive articles on the information profession, written by your peers. You will also receive the SLA “Information Outlook” monthly magazine.
6. Throughout the year, SLA and several of the Divisions organise stimulating learning events (e.g. workshops, guest speakers, debates, virtual seminars) for their members. Hear first-hand from practitioners.
Get a Mentor
7. Several members of SLA DPER have expressed an interest in meeting members to build mentoring relationships. This is an exceptional opportunity to be teamed with a colleague and get insights into the industry, advice on your professional development, and the views of someone with extensive or different experience.
Focus On Your Career
8. SLA offers a variety of professional development and career services via its web site: virtual learning series, job postings, salary survey, lists of journals, books, articles related to career search for librarians. Check out Click University, an online learning community for the benefit of SLA members only.
9. In June 2003, SLA redrafted its Competencies for Information Professionals of the 21st Century. This critical document defines SLA’s vision of the specific skills and knowledge requirements of our field. It outlines professional competencies (e.g., “Information professionals contribute effectively to senior management strategies and decisions regarding information applications, tools and technologies, and policies for the organization”) as well as personal competencies (e.g., “Information professionals see the big picture, take calculated risks”). Practical scenarios are presented for each set of competencies. This is an invaluable tool for your professional growth and assessment, so please take advantage of it.
Save Money!
10. SLA is very affordable. The annual membership fee of €110 (£70) includes your affiliation to one region, one industry Division and access to the entire network of people and resources that SLA offers.

An assessment of the perception of licensed librarians about their academic preparation and satisfaction in their job as librarians
An assessment of the perception of licensed librarians about their academic preparation and satisfaction in their job as librarians
David, Lourdes T. and Perez, Dante R. (2006) An assessment of the perception of licensed librarians about their academic preparation and satisfaction in their job as librarians. In Khoo, C. and Singh, D. and Chaudhry, A.S., Eds. Proceedings A-LIEP 2006: Asia-Pacific Conference on Library & Information Education & Practice 2006, pages pp. 416-422, Singapore.

Abstract
The study was conducted to find out how librarians perceive their readiness for the workplace after graduation and successfully passing the licensure examination for librarians. The results indicate that there are schools that consistently produce graduates who pass the licensure examination. The successful examinees perceive that the curriculum adequately prepared them for the examination and the workplace. However, they also perceive a gap between theory and practice. To narrow this gap they rec-ommend that libraries must conduct an orientation program for newly hired librarians, provide for grants to enable librarians to attend seminars, workshops, and visit other libraries. They also recommend changes in the curriculum to enable students to acquire competence in using information and communi-cations technologies, dealing with people, marketing and promotion, and business skills. All of the re-spondents found librarianship satisfying. They do not see themselves as leaving the profession in the near future.

Global Information Society 2007 Report
"The Global Information Society Watch 2007 report - the first in a series of annual reports- looks at state of the field of information and communication technology (ICT) policy at local and global levels and particularly how policy impacts on the lives of people living in developing countries.
Studies of the ICT policy situation in twenty-two countries from four regions are featured: Africa (Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Uganda); Asia (Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and the Philippines); Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru); and Eastern Europe (Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia and Romania), with one report from a Western European country (Spain).
The report concludes that when it comes to ICTs for development, there are some conspicuous similarities between the countries. Excluding Spain, the other twenty-one countries each show obvious evidence of the “digital divide” which impacts on the majority of people negatively. According to Brazilian authors RITS, the absence of a people-orientated policy framework in Brazil runs the risk of condemning the vast majority of people to “eternal disconnection.” The report also includes provocative, analytical essays on five international institutions (including ICANN and the World Intellectual Property Organisation) questioning the extent to which they allow all stake-holders to participate in their processes. There is a special section on how to measure progress. "
The Global Information Society Watch 2007report will be launched on 22 May 2007, at the United Nations' Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, during the cluster of WSIS-related events.

How to Think Like Leonardo Da Vinci?
Today, I will introduce you to a book that has become one of my dearest friends. The book is "How to think like Leonardo Da Vinci?" by Michael Gelb.
This book takes you through an interesting journey with Da Vinchi. It teaches you 7 main Da Vinchian principles that where practiced by Leonardo and that - if used - would affect your life style positively.
Starting with Curiosita, where you will learn how to be curiose about every thing around you and how to develop continuous learning habits. this last step won't be done unless you practice Demostrazione & sensazione where you will use all of your senses to experience the whole universe and to reduce the amount of uncertainty.
Also, it teaches you the principle of whole brain thinking. when it matches between art and science and finds connections between different phenomena in this life.
of course, it won't ignore well being and fitness. The book gives you an idea about Da Vinchi's diet.
When you read this book , you'll have a free journey through renaissance time.
Dear LIS Cafe~ members, Join us in our reading trip and once you find an interesting book share your ideas about it with us.
